Wild Turkey

USA / Kentucky

In Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, known for bold bourbon from low barrel-entry proof and heavily charred barrels.

History & character

In Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, overlooking the Kentucky River. Its roots lie in a distillery built by Thomas Ripy in 1891; Austin Nichols bought it in 1971 and named it the Wild Turkey Distillery. A new distillery was built in 2011.

The name dates to 1940, when Austin Nichols executive Thomas McCarthy took warehouse samples on a wild turkey hunt; his friends loved it and kept asking for "that wild turkey bourbon".

It uses less corn than typical bourbons and distils to a relatively low strength. It is famous for legendary master distiller Jimmy Russell, who started in 1954. Campari Group has owned it since 2009.
