Woodford Reserve Distillery

USA / Kentucky · Founded 1812

One of Kentucky's oldest distilleries, near Versailles. Restored by Brown-Forman, it launched Woodford Reserve in 1996.

History & character

The distillery stands about eight miles from Versailles in north-central Kentucky. Distilling began on the site in 1812, and its main building, completed in 1838, makes it one of the oldest distilleries in Kentucky. In the mid-1800s James C. Crow worked here, advancing techniques such as sour mash fermentation and barrel maturation.

The Pepper family sold the property to Leopold Labrot and James Graham in 1878. Brown-Forman acquired it in 1941, bought it back and restored it in 1993, and launched the Woodford Reserve brand in 1996.

Woodford Reserve bourbon combines copper pot still spirit made here with column still spirit from Brown-Forman's distillery in Shively. The site is a National Historic Landmark, and the brand is the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby.
