The Dalmore

Scotland / Highlands · Founded 1839

A distillery at Alness on the Cromarty Firth, known for its royal stag emblem from the Mackenzie family and rich, sherry-influenced malts.

History & character

Established in 1839 by Alexander Matheson at Alness, about 20 miles north of Inverness on the banks of the Cromarty Firth.

In 1867 it was sold to the brothers Andrew and Charles Mackenzie, who introduced the 12-pointed royal stag emblem that still appears on every bottle. The Mackenzie family held it until 1960, when it came together with Whyte & Mackay, which owns the distillery today.

Its whiskies are typically matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks and then partly in sherry casks, giving the house style of orange, chocolate and spice.
