How to enjoy it
- Neat
- On the rocks
- With water
Try it neat to pick out the vanilla from American oak against the dried fruit from European oak. On the rocks or with a little water, the sweetness comes forward and it becomes easier still.
Food pairing
Milk chocolate, caramelised nuts and bakes with orange peel.
Background & production
Made at The Macallan Distillery in Speyside. Where the classic Sherry Oak range centres on European oak sherry casks, the Double Cask range combines two types: sherry-seasoned American oak and European oak.
The Macallan's casks are filled with sherry in Spanish bodegas to season them, then emptied and shipped to the distillery in Speyside. American oak is credited with vanilla and fresh-fruit sweetness, European oak with dried fruit and soft spice.
The 12 Years Old, matured for a minimum of 12 years, is the core of the range and is bottled at 40% ABV.
