How to enjoy it

  • Neat
  • Highball
  • With water

Neat or with a splash of water shows off its delicate aromas. It's light enough to hold together well in a highball, too.

Food pairing

Brioche or banana bread. Also prosciutto or white-fish carpaccio.

Background & production

Made at the distillery in the village of Knockando in Speyside; the name comes from the Gaelic for 'little black hill'. It was founded in 1898 by John Tytler Thomson and designed by architect Charles Doig. Gin producers W&A Gilbey bought it in 1903.

After a 1962 merger the licence passed to Justerini & Brooks, and the distillery remains closely tied to the J&B blend. It is now owned by Diageo.

The 12 Year Old is a light bourbon-cask bottling at 43% ABV.
