Knockando

Scotland / Speyside · Founded 1898

Founded in 1898 in the Speyside village of Knockando. Closely tied to the J&B blend, it makes light, elegant malt.

History & character

A distillery in the Speyside village of Knockando, whose name comes from the Gaelic for 'little black hill'. It was founded in 1898 by John Tytler Thomson and designed by architect Charles Doig.

Shortly after production began, the collapse of the whisky boom forced it to close, but gin producers W&A Gilbey bought it in 1903. When Gilbey merged with United Wine Traders in 1962, the distillery passed to its Justerini & Brooks division.

It remains closely associated with the J&B blend, with a small share of output reserved for single malt; an official 12 Year Old was launched in 1978. It is now owned by Diageo.
