Salty, oily foods such as smoked fish, smoked cheese or tinned sardines.
Background & production
Made at Glengyle in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula. Founded by William Mitchell in 1872, it closed in 1925. Hedley Wright — owner of Springbank and a descendant of Mitchell — bought and restored the buildings, and production restarted in 2004 after nearly 80 years.
Because the Glengyle trademark belonged to another company, the single malt is sold as Kilkerran, the old name for Campbeltown.
The 12 Year Old was the distillery's first core expression. Made from lightly peated malt and matured in 70% bourbon and 30% sherry casks, it is bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration or added colour.
