How to enjoy it

  • Highball
  • Neat
  • With water

Lighter than many Islay malts; in a highball the smoke and citrus open up refreshingly. Neat, floral notes come through too.

Food pairing

Sushi, sashimi, grilled fish and smoked cheese.

Background & production

Located near Port Askaig in north-east Islay, looking across to Jura. Built in 1846, it is owned by Diageo.

It is the largest distillery on Islay, producing over 7 million litres a year, most of which goes into blends such as Johnnie Walker Black Label.

The 12 Year Old is pale, with floral and peppery notes alongside the peat — one of the lighter Islay styles. Bottled at 43%.
