Pulteney

Scotland / Highlands · Founded 1826

A distillery in the harbour town of Wick, near the northern tip of mainland Scotland, making Old Pulteney — 'the Maritime Malt'.

History & character

Founded in 1826 by James Henderson in Pulteneytown, Wick, in Caithness. The town was named after Sir William Pulteney, and the distillery was built during Wick's herring boom.

It closed in 1930, as trade fell after the local parish voted in prohibition, and stayed shut for two decades until it reopened in 1951. It has been owned by Inver House Distillers since 1995.

Its water arrives along a mill lade built by the engineer Thomas Telford from Loch Hempriggs. Casks mature in the salty sea air of the North Sea coast, which the distillery highlights as part of its maritime character.
