Mortlach

Scotland / Speyside · Founded 1823

Dufftown's first licensed distillery, in Speyside. Its unique '2.81 times' distillation gives a rich, meaty spirit often called the 'Beast of Dufftown'.

History & character

Mortlach was founded in 1823 by James Findlater and was the first legal distillery in Dufftown. William Grant, who later founded Glenfiddich in 1887, worked at Mortlach for 20 years and rose to become its manager.

In 1897 Alexander Mitchell Cowie expanded the distillery with the architect Charles C. Doig, and the complex distillation regime known as '2.81' took shape. Spirit passes through its three wash stills and three spirit stills in different ways, including the smallest still, nicknamed the 'Wee Witchie'.

The distillery passed to John Walker & Sons in 1923 and is now owned by Diageo. Mortlach is also a key component in several Johnnie Walker blends.
