Background & production
Founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Mortlach was the first legal distillery in Dufftown. Now owned by Diageo, it is also an important component of Johnnie Walker blends.
It is known for the '2.81 times' distillation shaped by Alexander Cowie in 1897, in which the spirit follows different routes through stills of varying shapes to give a meaty, powerful character.
The 16 Year Old Distiller's Dram is matured predominantly in refill and first-fill oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 43.4% ABV.
