BenRiach

Scotland / Speyside · Founded 1898

A Speyside distillery south of Elgin that reopened in 1965 after a long silence, known for making both unpeated and peated spirit.

History & character

In northern Speyside, south of Elgin. It was founded in 1898 by John Duff, who also owned the neighbouring Longmorn Distillery; a private railway linked the two, carrying coal, barley, peat and casks.

In 1900, in the wake of the collapse of major whisky buyer Pattisons, it stopped distilling. Only its maltings stayed in use, producing malt for Longmorn.

It distilled again from 1965 under Glenlivet Distillers. It is now owned by Brown-Forman.
