Laphroaig
Scotland / Islay · Founded 1815
On Islay's south coast, still doing some of its own floor malting. Its intense, medicinal peat has a devoted following.
History & character
On Islay's south coast near Port Ellen. Founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston. In 1954 Bessie Williamson inherited the distillery from Ian Hunter and became a notable figure in its management.
It still floor-malts about 10% of its barley on site using hand-cut Islay peat, the source of its intense, often-called medicinal smokiness.
In 1994 the then Prince of Wales visited and granted it a Royal Warrant. Since 2014 it has been owned by what is now Suntory Global Spirits.
