Lagavulin

Scotland / Islay · Founded 1816

A south-coast Islay distillery whose long, slow distillation yields smoky yet rich and mellow spirit.

History & character

In the village of Lagavulin on Islay's south coast. It officially dates from 1816, when John Johnston and others built distilleries on the site; records show at least ten illicit stills in the area as early as 1742.

In the late 19th century Peter Mackie became involved, and Lagavulin became the heart of his firm's White Horse blend, which received a Royal Warrant in 1908.

Slow distillation in pear-shaped pot stills gives its weighty, mellow smokiness. It is owned by Diageo, and the 16 Year Old is its flagship.
