How to enjoy it
- Highball
- Neat
- On the rocks
The gentle peat makes it a good introduction to smoky whisky. Highland sweetness and light smoke stretch out well in a highball, while neat or on the rocks the fruit is easier to pick out.
Food pairing
Lightly smoky bar snacks: salted yakitori, bacon or smoked nuts.
Background & production
Made at Tomatin distillery in the village of Tomatin, south of Inverness. Established in 1897, it was bought in 1986 by a group including Takara Shuzo, becoming the first Scotch distillery owned by a Japanese company. Cù Bòcan is the peated counterpart to the unpeated Tomatin range.
The peated spirit is distilled in small batches every winter. Signature combines whisky matured in ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and virgin oak casks.
The name comes from a local legend of the Cù Bòcan, a ghostly hound that appears once a generation to cause havoc before vanishing in a puff of blue smoke. The brand launched in 2013. It is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered and with natural colour.
