How to enjoy it

  • Highball

  • With water

One of the gentler Islay malts, it is a good starting point. In a highball, citrus and smoke open up refreshingly.

Food pairing

Grilled oysters or scallops, smoked salmon and citrusy dishes.

Background & production

Located in Bowmore, Islay's main village, the distillery has been making whisky since 1779. Its seaside No.1 Vaults received its first cask in 1779 and is said to be among the oldest whisky maturation warehouses in the world; the damp, salty air keeps temperature swings and evaporation low.

Bowmore still runs traditional floor maltings, malting part of its own barley.

The 12 Year Old marries whisky aged 12 years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels and European oak oloroso sherry casks. Bottled at 40%.
