Hakushu

Japan / Yamanashi · Founded 1973

Located in a forest at around 700 m at the foot of Mt. Kaikomagatake in the Southern Alps. Soft water and a cool climate produce fresh, light spirit.

History & character

Opened by Suntory in 1973 in the forest at the foot of Mount Kaikoma in the Southern Alps, in Hokuto, Yamanashi — hence its nickname, the "forest distillery".

Its water is Southern Alps rain and snow that filters through granite for about 20 years. A second distillery, Hakushu East, opened nearby in 1981, and operations have since been consolidated there.

Alongside Hakushu single malt, it supplies malt for Suntory's blends.
