Kanosuke
Japan / Kagoshima · Founded 2017
A distillery born from a shochu maker, on Fukiage beach in Hioki, Kagoshima. Known for its sunset views over the East China Sea and mellow whisky using shochu casks.
History & character
Founded in 2017 on Fukiage beach in Hioki, Kagoshima. Its operator traces its roots to Komasa Jozo, a shochu distiller established in 1883.
Komasa Jozo pioneered cask-ageing of shochu in 1957. Yoshitsugu Komasa, the fourth generation, took up his grandfather Kanosuke's dream and began making whisky.
The land, with sunsets over the East China Sea, is dubbed "MELLOW LAND", and the distillery's concept is "MELLOW LAND, MELLOW WHISKY". Its methods reflect its shochu heritage, such as re-charring casks that held aged shochu.
