Fuji Gotemba

Japan / Shizuoka · Founded 1973

Kirin's distillery at the foot of Mount Fuji in Gotemba, Shizuoka, making both malt and grain whisky and known especially for its diverse grain whiskies.

History & character

Kirin Distillery's site at the foot of Mount Fuji in Gotemba, Shizuoka. It was set up in 1972 as a joint venture between Kirin Brewery, Seagram and Chivas Brothers, and opened in 1973.

Everything from mashing to bottling happens on site. Alongside pot-still malt, it makes grain whisky in three ways: continuous column stills, a beer column and doubler (bourbon style), and kettle-and-column stills.

It uses Mount Fuji's underground spring water. Because it makes all its own malt and grain, it can produce a "single blended" whisky from one distillery's spirit alone.
