Cardhu
Scotland / Speyside · Founded 1824
A Speyside distillery near Archiestown, best known as a heart malt of Johnnie Walker, producing soft, sweet spirit.
History & character
Near Archiestown in Speyside. It began as a farm where John Cumming and his wife Helen distilled illicitly, and was licensed in 1824.
In 1885 a new, larger distillery was built nearby, and the old stills were sold to William Grant, who went on to found Glenfiddich. In 1893 Elizabeth Cumming, the founders' daughter-in-law, sold the distillery to John Walker & Sons, while the Cumming family continued to run it.
Now owned by Diageo, it has six stills, and much of its spirit goes into Johnnie Walker blends.
