How to enjoy it
- On the rocks
- Cocktails
- Highball
At 50% and full of spice, it is best on the rocks, letting the ice open it up gradually. The rye-forward profile also makes a great base for a Manhattan or Old Fashioned, and it holds its own in a highball.
Food pairing
Spice-rubbed grilled meat, jerky and peppered cheeses.
Background & production
Old Grand-Dad was first bottled in 1882 and has long been a bartenders' favourite for its spicy, rye-forward profile. Beam acquired the brand in 1987 and has kept the high-rye mash bill intact; Basil Hayden's uses the same recipe.
The mash bill is 63% corn, 27% rye and 10% malted barley.
'Bottled in Bond' is a US standard requiring whiskey from one distillery and one distilling season, aged at least four years in a government-supervised bonded warehouse and bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% ABV). This bottling meets that standard.
