Background & production
Isaac Wolfe Bernheim and his brother Bernard began selling liquor in Paducah, Kentucky, in 1872, and created this brand in 1879. The name is said to combine Bernheim's initials with that of John Harper, the owner of a famous racehorse.
The "Gold Medal" name refers to awards won at the 1885 New Orleans Exposition and the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Now owned by Diageo, for decades it has been sold mainly in Japan and elsewhere in Asia.
Gold Medal is bottled at 40% ABV in 700ml bottles.
