Glenkinchie
Scotland / Lowlands · Founded 1825
A Lowland distillery in East Lothian near Edinburgh. Representing the Lowlands in Diageo's Classic Malts, it is known for light, floral spirit.
History & character
In Pencaitland, East Lothian, about 15 miles from Edinburgh. Founded in 1825 by brothers John and George Rate, it took the Glenkinchie name around 1837.
After the brothers went bankrupt in 1853 the site became a sawmill, but it was rebuilt and resumed distilling in 1881. It stopped malting its own barley in 1969 and turned the malting floors into a whisky museum; a new visitor centre opened in 2020.
Now owned by Diageo, it represents the Lowlands in the Classic Malts range. It runs just two stills, including a very large wash still of around 30,000 litres.
