Suntory's Hibiki is one of the most admired Japanese whiskies — floral, soft and elegant, in a beautiful 24-faceted bottle. It is a popular gift, but it can be hard to find, so many fans ask: what tastes like Hibiki?
This guide sums up what Hibiki Japanese Harmony tastes like, then recommends seven whiskies with a similar style.
What does Hibiki taste like?
Hibiki is Suntory's premium blended whisky brand, using malt from Yamazaki and Hakushu and grain whisky from Chita, among others (a blended whisky combines malt and grain whiskies). The no-age-statement Japanese Harmony has three key traits:
- Floral, fruity aromas of rose and lychee — elegant and sweet
- A clear, honeyed sweetness — likened to chocolate with orange peel
- A Mizunara finish — a refined note from casks made of Mizunara, a Japanese oak
It is barely smoky and drinks softly neat or with water. So the rule of thumb for a Hibiki alternative is: an elegant, sweet, soft blend.

Japanese alternatives
Suntory Royal
Created by Suntory's founder and first master blender, Shinjiro Torii, and launched in 1960 for the company's 60th anniversary. A Suntory blend like Hibiki, it has a sweet, floral nose with ripe fruit and honey and a soft, smooth texture.
It offers Hibiki-style elegance and softness at a more accessible level, and holds its aroma with water or ice.
Kirin Fuji Single Blended
A rare "single blended" whisky in which both malt and grain are made at the same distillery, Fuji Gotemba in Shizuoka. Ripe pear, green apple and honey with soft grain and malty depth.
If you love Hibiki for the harmony of the blend, this is a must-try. At 46% ABV, the fruit comes through clearly.
Taketsuru Pure Malt
Named after Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru, a pure malt (blended malt) made only from Yoichi and Miyagikyo malts. Sweet, soft oak, apple and pear, and a rounded malty body.
With no grain whisky, it has more body than Hibiki and a touch of peat — ideal if you want Hibiki's softness with a bit more depth.
Nikka Days
A light, delicate blend built on Nikka's Coffey grain and Miyagikyo malt. Fresh white flowers, orange blossom, pear and citrus with a silky texture.
Lighter than Hibiki, but it shares that floral elegance, which lifts beautifully in a highball (whisky topped with chilled soda water — hugely popular in Japan).
Scotch alternatives
Ballantine's 17
Every component is aged at least 17 years; more than 40 malts and grains go into it, with Miltonduff, Glenburgie and Scapa at its core.
Honey, vanilla and dried fruit with light smoke and florals, plus creamy toffee, apple and pear. The softness of a long-aged blend echoes Hibiki.
Johnnie Walker 18
Johnnie Walker's 18-year-old blend, once known as Platinum Label. Rich sweet fruit with toffee and caramel, creamy vanilla, almond and tangerine, and just a whisper of smoke.
Its sweet, refined smoothness should satisfy Hibiki fans.
Old Parr 12
A blended Scotch built around Cragganmore from Speyside, famous for its crackle-patterned square bottle and long loved in Japan. Apple and raisin sweetness with a faint touch of peat.
Mellow and excellent with water, much like Hibiki.
If you want to go higher
For a special occasion, Hibiki 21 — a blend of carefully selected malt and grain whiskies aged at least 21 years — is the pinnacle: ripe and dried fruit, honey and deep oak, dense and smooth.
