Craigellachie

Scotland / Speyside · Founded 1891

A distillery in the Speyside village of Craigellachie, known for heavy, 'meaty' spirit from traditional worm-tub condensers.

History & character

In the village of Craigellachie in Speyside. It was built in 1891 by the Craigellachie Distillery Co., a group of blenders and merchants including Alexander Edward and Peter Mackie, and designed by Elgin architect Charles Doig.

Ownership passed to Peter Mackie in 1916, to the Distillers Company in 1927 and to SMD in 1930. In 1998 it went to Bacardi along with John Dewar & Sons, and Dewar's now runs it.

It still uses worm tubs, which cool the vapour slowly and give a heavy, characterful spirit. A range of Craigellachie single malts was first released in 2014.
