Cooley

Ireland / County Louth · Founded 1987

A distillery on the Cooley Peninsula in north-east Ireland, known for breaking Irish conventions with double distillation and peated malt.

History & character

Located on the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth, north-east Ireland. It was founded in 1987 by entrepreneur John Teeling, who converted an old potato alcohol plant.

With two pot stills and three column stills, it double distils rather than triple distilling like most Irish producers. It created Connemara, a rare Irish peated single malt, and The Tyrconnell single malt.

Beam acquired Cooley in 2012, and Suntory's purchase of Beam in 2014 brought it into what is now Suntory Global Spirits.
