Kilbeggan
Ireland / County Westmeath · Founded 1757
Founded in 1757, one of Ireland's oldest licensed distilleries, home to what is said to be the oldest working pot still in the world.
History & character
On the River Brosna in County Westmeath, in the Irish midlands. It was founded by Matthew MacManus in 1757.
Financial troubles forced it to close in 1957, but in 1982 local people formed an association to restore it as a museum. Cooley Distillery acquired the assets in 1987, and distilling resumed in 2007, the distillery's 250th anniversary.
One of its two pot stills is a 180-year-old still from the old Tullamore distillery — said to be the oldest working whiskey pot still in the world. A 19th-century waterwheel has also been restored. It is owned by Suntory Global Spirits.
