Mars Komagatake
Japan / Nagano · Founded 1985
Operated by Hombo Shuzo at 798 m at the foot of Mt Kisokomagatake in the Central Alps (formerly known as Mars Shinshu). The cool climate allows slow maturation.
History & character
Opened in 1985 by Kagoshima's Hombo Shuzo at 798 metres above sea level in Miyata, Nagano, at the foot of Mount Kisokoma in the Central Alps (formerly Shinshu Mars Distillery). Hombo had obtained a whisky licence in 1949 and begun making whisky under adviser Kiichiro Iwai.
With demand for whisky slumping, distilling stopped in 1992; it resumed in 2011 after nearly two decades.
It makes Komagatake single malt and the Iwai blends, named after Kiichiro Iwai.
