History & character
A distillery in Rothes, Speyside, founded in 1897 by John Hopkins & Company, who chose the site for the clean water of the Granty Burn, a tributary of the Spey. It was designed by renowned distillery architect Charles Doig, and its signature pagoda roof still stands.
The owners rushed to produce spirit in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, but construction ran late; the first spirit is said to have run on 15 December 1897 during a snowstorm, in a still house still without doors or windows.
At its founding it was the first malt distillery to install pneumatic drum maltings. They stopped operating in 1967 but are preserved as the only surviving example with the original workings. The distillery is now owned by Inver House Distillers (International Beverage).
