Scapa
Scotland / Islands (Orkney) · Founded 1885
Overlooking Scapa Flow near Kirkwall on Orkney. Made from unpeated malt, it is unusually honeyed and fruity for an island whisky.
History & character
Scapa stands on the shore of Scapa Flow near Kirkwall on Orkney's Mainland. It was founded in 1885 by Glasgow blenders Macfarlane & Townsend.
In 1919 a fire nearly destroyed it, and sailors from the fleet anchored nearby are said to have saved it with a bucket chain of seawater. The distillery was mothballed in 1994, refurbished in 2004 and returned to full production in 2005.
Its wash still was originally a Lomond still. The malt is not dried over peat, so the whisky is far less smoky than most island malts and known for its honeyed sweetness. It is owned by Chivas Brothers, part of Pernod Ricard.
