Aultmore

Scotland / Speyside · Founded 1895

A Speyside distillery near Keith, long prized by blenders. Its spirit is light and clean, with grassy, herbal character.

History & character

Located near Keith in Speyside, Aultmore was founded in 1895 by Alexander Edward, who also owned Benrinnes. The name comes from the Gaelic for "big burn".

John Dewar & Sons bought it in 1923, and after several industry mergers it has belonged to Bacardi's Dewar's since 1998. The distillery was rebuilt and expanded in 1970 and runs two wash stills and two spirit stills.

For most of its life the spirit went into blends and was rarely seen as a single malt. That changed in 2014, when a 12 Year Old was released as part of Dewar's Last Great Malts range.
