Glen Garioch
Scotland / Highlands · Founded 1797
One of Scotland's oldest working distilleries, in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. Known for rich maltiness, honeyed sweetness and a creamy texture.
History & character
Glen Garioch sits in the town of Oldmeldrum near Aberdeen. Founded in 1797 by brothers John and Alexander Manson, it is regarded as one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland. The surrounding area, known for fine barley, has long been called the Granary of Aberdeenshire.
Production stopped in 1968 because of a water shortage, but resumed in 1972 after a new spring was found on a neighbouring farm. The distillery was mothballed in 1995 and reopened in 1997.
It came under Morrison Bowmore Distillers in 1990 and is now owned by Suntory Global Spirits. The name is pronounced "Geery".
