Cragganmore
Scotland / Speyside · Founded 1869
A distillery at Ballindalloch on the Spey, known for its unusual flat-topped spirit stills and chosen to represent Speyside in Diageo's Classic Malts.
History & character
At Ballindalloch in Speyside. It was founded in 1869 by John Smith on land leased from Sir George Macpherson-Grant. Smith chose the site for the water of the Craggan Burn and for access to the Strathspey Railway, which made it easy to ship whisky.
After Smith, the distillery was run by his brother George and his son Gordon. Following Gordon's death in 1923, it passed to the Cragganmore-Glenlivet Distillery Co.; the Macpherson-Grant family kept a half share until 1965. It has been owned by Diageo since 1997.
Its spirit stills are short and flat-topped, a shape said to influence the character of the whisky. The 12 Year Old was selected for United Distillers' Classic Malts range.
