Royal Lochnagar
Scotland / Highlands · Founded 1845
Diageo's smallest distillery, just outside Balmoral Castle. Its 'Royal' title comes from a Royal Warrant granted by Queen Victoria.
History & character
Located at Crathie on Deeside in eastern Scotland, just beyond the boundaries of the Balmoral estate. John Begg built the distillery in 1845.
In 1848 Prince Albert and Queen Victoria visited from Balmoral. The distillery soon began supplying the Queen and was granted a Royal Warrant, adding 'Royal' to its name.
It is the smallest distillery in Diageo's estate, with one wash still, one spirit still and traditional worm tubs. Much of its spirit goes into Johnnie Walker blends.
